My Hand!” “John Bell”:http://www.effluxity.com/ showed this to me on VHS when we were roommates Back in the Day. Glad to see it made it to the web.
* ??Everything2??: “A Simple Way to Make the Best Coffee You’ve Ever Had”:http://www.everything2.org/?node_id=1181742. So, after about a year from first having received it from “Jen & Jode”:http://sojourn-of-grace.net/, I’ve started to use my French Press. I love it — four cups of excellent coffee, no stupid gurgling machine with a ginormous carafe to clean out. Thanks again, Poleys!
* ??Gamespot??: “LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy”:http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/legostarwarstheoriginaltrilogy/index.html. Speaking of George Lucas, there’s a sequel coming for the Lego Star Wars game. Sarah and I were totally ADDICTED to this game for four weeks while we played it through entirely. I can’t wait for the new one.
* ??Mark Pligrm??: “Bye, Apple”:http://diveintomark.org/archives/2006/05/30/bye-apple. Mark ditches Apple in favor of an IBM desktop + Linux. I dunno — I played with Linux a lot in college and found myself screwing around with it more than I was getting work done. Besides, Mac OS and Windows XP both work with my iPod nano. *Update:* Mark “follows up”:http://diveintomark.org/archives/2006/06/02/when-the-bough-breaks on his decision to walk away from Apple. His argument is compelling, but I’m not so sure going pure-Linux is. Maybe it’s time to start playing with this “Ubuntu”:http://www.ubuntu.com/ everyone’s been “talking about”:http://lunapark6.com/?p=1235.

There’s a joke about first-gen Apple technology here, I just _know_ it.

* Wikipedia: “Microsoft Access”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Access. I’ve been using MS Access at work again. Access gets a lot of disdain from REAL programmers because, well, it’s a dumbed-down version of SQL + a dumbed-down version of Visual Basic. But, you can do some pretty tricked-out things with Access in a relatively short timeframe. Someone should register pimpmyaccess.com. :)

  1. concerning linux: That is exactly the reason i moved away from linux to MacOS X. I was working on my box as much as I was doing work.

I must say though that linux has come a long way. Ubuntu 6 is a great desktop OS with much of the eye candy (and features) that is in OS X. Even has expose, and the virtual desktop 3d-cube-switcher is beautiful.

3 years ago I predicted that i would switch back to linux in 5 years (2008) because it would have caught up or maybe even pass OS X. I’ve since changed my target date to 2010. This is the date that the new Mac i buy in 2007 will reach the end of its apple care support and i’ll be looking for a new machine. In many ways though, it is much easier to work using linux than macos x these days. The only real problems i have left is good Samba support (for some reason it works better on MacOS, which i don’t understand unless they are tweaking the code and not giving back) and better MS Office support. Crossover office is always a couple version behind … i hope to see better virtualization support to bridge this gap.

And that lucas thing … nice. :)

  2. I do love my French Press, enough that I own a four-cupper, plus a french press travel mug (a GODSEND). I had an eight-cupper in Papua New Guinea, land of Awesome Coffee. But I bought that Cuisinart grinder/brewer extravaganza and have to say, I think I’m in love. It’s quiet, it’s easy to clean (ridiculously so), and it stays warm for a long time. And it’s on a timer. And freshly ground beans are love.

  3. Ang, thanks, that’s brilliant.

We used TI graphing calculators in high school and college. I specifically taught myself Assembly programming for the TI just so I could write a program for Sarah that would draw a heart on her TI-85. That’s nerd love. ;-)

Seriously, though, the things you can do with these calculators is sick. “This site”:http://www.ticalc.org/ has been around at least since 1996 with a vast archive of games and add-ons you can get for your calculator.

I was actually just thinking of selling my TI-86 on eBay, but now you’ve got me all misty-eyed!

  4. I’ve been into Macintosh since 1994 and about 1.5 yrs ago I bought a PC. April 8th I bought a new PowerBook G4 to return from the dark side. I work with PCs at work and had that one here- only benefit was more free and cheap software. I find the Mac less quirky, works with multiple programs open more easily and is much more fun. All of my favorite, most important software is available on Mac OSX.

  5. “Besides, Mac OS and Windows XP both work with my iPod nano.”

So does the default player in Ubuntu, Rhythmbox. At least two more non-default players, Banshee and Amarok that I know of also talks to the ipods.

Then again, the ipod is more of the same evil tie-in IMO…
