Seven days, 1,320 miles, 400 digital photos, and at least five pounds later, Sarah and I arrived back in New York City on Saturday. We had a great time in Bermuda and saw lots of great stuff. The stories are long, but sleep is short, so here are the highlights:
# We’re still rocking back and forth from the movement of the ocean. Going out and coming back was a bit rough due to the turbulent east-coast weather we’ve been having.
# We took a catamaran tour and went snorkeling–very fun.
# Tanned, but not burnt: seeing the sights and staying active kept us from spending any time at the beaches.
# Helmet-diving was very cool. We’ve got great underwater polaroids to scan.
# It’s hard to be a “deep” person when you’re constantly surrounded with the pressure to consume, consume, consume!
# Did a walking tour of St. George where we found really beautiful Anglican church ruins.
# Sarah had a great time at the Spa, while I discovered that I like running on a treadmill.
# Should have taken the 8:30 PM dinner seating rather than the 6:15 PM.
# We finished the second half of the first season of 24.
# Using the Internet was somewhat tempting, but not at $2 a minute.
Pictures can be found here, courtesy of Mig, a simple-but-it-works PHP-based image gallery package (props to PlugSocket technical support for finding an alternative to the configuration-heavy Gallery).
Welcome home! Loved the photos, especially the peacock and the Coke machine–that’s a classic!
I 2nd that “Welcome home!”!!!
That camera’s nice dude! Is that all automatic settings? Really nice auto settings, if so. I love the “Schmozer at Sunset” shot. I wish I had a shot like that of Beck, it’s be in my wallet right away!
Looks like you kids had a great time! Awiiiiight!
So .. you get back, and at 1:03AM you post a story. Withdrawl starting to get to ya?
I question the logic of choosing mig over gallery, but, ya know .. what ever floats your boat I guess. Gallery really is a wonderful, full features gallery system. and the setup is insanely easy.
I’m sure you’ve written about it at some point before, but i’m a lazy sob and don’t wanna search
.. What type of camera do you have. Those pics are really nice.
Altp.
Jai, aside from macro mode and occasionally shutting off or forcing the flash, everything else (focus, speed, etc.) was automatic. Some of the pictures (like “looking at a thing in the ocean”) were washed out, so I used Photoshop Elements 2 to do some cleanup, cropping, balance, etc., etc.
Mike, I actually really wanted Gallery, but the install required my service provider to install additional software–which I knew wasn’t going to fly–as well as edit .htaccess files, which makes Our Story break (again, because of the service provider). Mig was an easy install: copying all the files to the server and uploading photos made it “just work.” Additionally, I’ve since edited a configuration file for some customization and I plan on changing the templates to more closely match the site.
I wrote a bit about the camera here, with links to reviews and purchase info: it’s a Sony Cybershot DSC-P72. I highly recommend the camera for point-and-click shooting. I don’t know much about photography, so a more fully-featured camera would have been a waste.
The camera usually behaved as expected and the photos looked great.
Bermuda’s a mighty fine place. Good pics! You’ll have to tell us about cruise ships in August.
Happened apon your site courtesy of a post on movabletype.org and saw that you guys had vacationed in Bermuda this year.
It is such a beautiful country. Where did you guys stay? Does the Ferry Captain from the Fairmoung Southhampton to the Fairmount Hamilton still call himself Hey You and his frist mate Hey You Too?
