More Eyeball-Friendly

Design cues by Dave and Doug have helped make this site a bit easier to read. I know a lot of you had to sort of squint at the three-column layout in 800×600 (Mom, Mom-in-law, Jaime-at-work, to name a few…)–especially when I prattle on and on without using extended entry. ;-) Hopefully the new two-column thing will help!

Also, just in time to answer my questions about sub-site design, Mark Pilgrim posts more of his Movable Type templates. Sweet.

Incidentally, I’ve been finding that the site-evolution (rather than site rewrites) are a much more efficient way to go with redesign. Incremental steps are far easier to accomplish with my limited design time (and abilities). They also allow for more subtle tweaks and enhancements.

More subtle tweaks and enhancements coming soon. :)

I wouldn’t call todays modification subtle. it was more like a “/common mike phrase here/, Thats a lot better.”

    Nice work Ken. ;-)

In contrast to anything I design, I’ve always loved your site’s simplicity. It reads like a newspaper, and that is way cool. I also kind of like the fact that the main section has a right sidebar, while the individual sections retain a right sidebar. That helps me know whick section I’m in. Gotta love that :)!

    err… I mean the individual sections reatain a ‘left’ sidebar… um… yeah… I’m still waking up… even though I’m at work.

The new design is nice and easy to read. Although I never had trouble before, it does seem to be a little easier on they eyes.

I too am thinking of ditching my 3-column layout for a simple 2-column one. Seeing your “site-evolution” just might be the push I needed to go through with it.

Everyone, thanks for the kind words…good to get some positive feedback. :)
Jai, the left-column in the individual archive is actually unintentional–I was thinking of changing the layout to match the homepage. I’m not impressed with the ~230px margin on the left side when you view the page in anything less than 1024×768.

You’re right, though, that there should probably be a way to distinguish between the homepage vs. the archive page. Hm. Perhaps by using color?

Did you say … color? Now you’re getting all radical on me! That’s like going from Newt Gingrich to Marylin Manson… whoa… I’m freaked out.
