Scientific American: The Semantic Web. For the semantic web to function, computers must have access to structured collections of information and sets of inference rules that they can use to conduct automated reasoning. Artificial-intelligence researchers have studied such systems since long before the Web was developed. Knowledge representation, as this technology is often called, is currently in a state comparable to that of hypertext before the advent of the Web: it is clearly a good idea, and some very nice demonstrations exist, but it has not yet changed the world. It contains the seeds of important applications, but to realize its full potential it must be linked into a single global system.
Just think, ten years from now, we’ll be laughing about how irrelevant this all was.
InfoWorld—arguably one of the best tech news sites on the web since C|Net got diluted—is now offering RSS feeds.
The Matrix: News. As promised, we are pleased to offer five new essays tackling philosophical themes that arise in The Matrix.
Psh, what’s the big deal? I had mine finished two years ago.
Apple announced it’s much ballyhooed Music service today. There is a Quicktime stream of the dog-and-pony show hosted by the inimitable Steve Jobs. Some improvements to iTunes make it exceptionally easy to share music between computers, something that I’ve used a Winamp plugin called BrowseAmp to do (ooh, there’s a new version out). What’s better, it looks like they are finally addressing the idea of legal MP3 downloads—for 99¢ a pop.
By the way, do not miss the “Baby Got Back” advertisement.
bah.
there’s very little good about this.
There are still restrictions on the music being downloaded. only share on up to 3 macs? um….
of course, you could get around it by burning to CD then re-ripping it .. but, why?
I’m all for 99cent downloads of songs that I want. I can get a whole cd for cheaper than I pay int he store. but, those songs will go on my file server so that I can access them from any computer in my house. Those songs will be copied to my computer at work, so that I can listen to them there.
also … only the top 5 labels? what about all the indies out there? Most of the stuff put out by the big 5 is a joke.
aac format? um … no, i want my media in an open format thank you.
Altp.
Gaaah! Must…resist…Steve Jobs’ reality…distortion…field!
Still, though, it’s nice that someone with the means is addressing the needs of the music community. Besides, if you’re going to attempt to revolutionize an industry which is dominated by a polygopoly, you have to address the major players if you want to get anything done in the first place…
Being bored at work and having my home server down stinks (not the G rated “stinks” Ken, you should try it sometimes! LOL!)! So what do I do? I read your Matrix paper, end to end. Pretty good bro. I give it an A- (by the way, what did you get on it?). I have just one grammatical question… what the heck is this line supposed to say:
“We see in his conversations with Trinity that he hasnt the never seems to believe in Neo.”
It’s the “he hasn’t the never seems to” that got me crosseyed.
But all in all, that was a very interesting read! I gotta watch that movie again now… MATRIX PARTY AT JAI’S!!!
I got a B- on the paper. I wrote it shortly after graduating from CCM and my writing was pretty rusty. There were a couple more grammatical errors than the one you caught, and the omitted paragraph really sucked.
I’m totally down for MatrixFest 2003.
What was the class? I guess I just asumed I was grading as a film teacher… LOL, since all I wrote were film papers for film classes.
